Best secure mobile messenger App of 2017

There are many messenger apps available in market today. All messenger apps allow users to send text, images and video from one device to another. All messenger apps allow users to send/receive data, but not all messaging apps are secure. With the problem of cyber attack increasing day by day, most of the apps available today are hacked easily and private data of users are stolen. Only a very few messaging apps provide end-to-end encryption. But still all our data is not secure.

When it comes to messaging, the first thing that comes in our mind is WhatsApp. WhatsApp has been ruling the mobile messaging market for some years. Although there are many messaging apps which provide the users same features as WhatsApp, nothing can match the user base of WhatsApp. WhatsApp has a huge user base of over 1 billion and thus making it the most popular messaging app. WhatsApp started offering its users a 256 bit end-to-end encryption a couple of years ago. However secure it is, there are still some loopholes in it which makes it vulnerable.

Signal is a messaging app which was developed by Open Whisper Systems and released in 2014. Signal allows users to make voice and video calls to other Signal users on iOS and Android. Signal also allows users to transfer text, image, video over a Wi-Fi connection or mobile network. Signal also provides its users with end-to-end encryption. Signal has a built-in mechanism to verify that no man-in-the-middle attack has occurred.

Signal is an open source software application. The complete source code of signal clients for Android, iOS and Google Chrome is available on GitHub under a free software license. The security protocol implemented by Signal is very secure. There have been no reports of Signal messenger getting hacked. Even the CIA was unable to hack Signal messenger. In October 2016, the Signal Protocol was implemented into WhatsApp, Facebook messenger and Google Allo, which makes the conversations of more than a billion people to be encrypted.

When it comes to User Experience, WhatsApp has been in the field for more than 8 years and has been improving consistently by bringing in voice and video calling. On the other hand, Signal has also managed to add voice calling to its messaging app. But WhatsApp has the upper hand in this in terms of user loyalty and support.

Coming to the conclusion, the instant mobile messaging market had been a tough one with the increasing number of messaging apps releasing these days. ┬áBut when we compare the user base of these apps, nothing can stand a change against the one billion user base of WhatsApp. However, having the most number of downloads doesn’t make it the best one. When we compare in terms of security and being completely funded by user donations and grants, Signal stands out as the most secure messaging app available out of the bunch.
